Summer of Kelly…
So, since I was feeling so bored and stagnant, I decided that I’m gonna read as much as I can before MSP starts. I feel like it’s less of a waste of time than watching TV/stalking on FB, and I feel less depressed :o) So far, here’s what I’ve read:
* The Lovely Bones by Alice Siebold: I liked this book. Different than what I expected, and toward the end I was afraid I’d see the ghosts of teenaged girls everywhere… heh. I thought it was going to be more of a suspense/thriller, but it turned out to be more centered on spirituality and healing. It was a page turner, none the less, and I’d reccomend it.
* My Friend Leonard by James Frey: LOVED this. I’d read A Million Little Pieces last fall and thought it was outstanding. True, fabricated— doesn’t matter to me. I like Frey’s writing style, once you get used to it. This book was so involving, and heartwrenching— it made me cry twice. His Bright Shiny Morning is in my pile of books here to read.
* Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman: Good book. I’d read Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs several years ago and loved it. I went through a huge pop culture/essay kick that was fueled by reading that. Owl, however, is a novel, and it was (to sound cliche) gripping. I finished it in a day.
Right now, I’m on The Other by David Guterson. It’s harder for me to get through this one. I remember hearing Guterson on Fresh Air when the book came out, and I was really excited to pick up the book, but he’s so descriptive in his writing that I find myself getting caught up in the words rather than the story.
