I'll tumbl for you...

So I decided I’m going to blog about the perils of being a fatty.

First of all, I’m not a big fat fatty.  Just a regular one.  I know that in society at large, and especially the career field that I’m persuing, there’s a zero tolerance policy against people of thickness.  I’m not expecting for the whole world to turn into chubby chasers, but these are two issues that have really put a bee in my bonnet.

First of all, if you have to be a fatty you’d better not be a white woman.  Issue one:  chubby guys are more socially acceptable than chubby women.  Since I have more down time after my recital, I can spend some time vegging in front of the tv in the afternoons, where I usually watch a couple episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens.  And here’s the evidence— King of Queens has no problems with Kevin James being stout.  Can you imagine having a sitcom with a plus-sized woman as a main character?  Let alone one that is married to a socially acceptable attractive man?  Issue two, which is actually bigger to me: there is a distinct racial bias when it comes to full-figured women.  Earlier this semester in acting class, we had an assignment to type ourselves, and find actors who’s career we could emulate.  Unfortunatly the emphasis was on film actors.  When doing so, I knew I had to answer with plus-sized actors, because that’s how the industry works.  When googling these topics, I came across two things:  pictures of full figured black women, like Mo’nique, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, etc etc etc, where they were celebrated, complimented, and praised for their curves.  When I tried to find white actresses, I came across either negative comments about women like Kirstie Alley and Rosie O’Donnell, or articles calling actresses like Scarlett Johannson and Kate Winslet full figured because they have hips and/or boobs.  Really, can you think of a plus sized (and I mean really plus sized, like over a size 14 not that stupid model/film standard where anything over an 8 is plus sized) white actress who’s successful?  Let alone being successful in leading/romantic roles.  Like I said, I know this is the evil of the business.  I don’t expect it to change, but it’s ridiculous that what’s fat for some is fabulous for others.
